The Truth That Sets You Free
We live in a world with more information at our fingertips than any generation before us, yet finding the truth can sometimes feel harder than ever.
Ask a question online and you can get a thousand answers. One person says, “Follow your heart.” Another says, “Live your truth.” Someone else says, “Do whatever makes you happy.” We are surrounded by opinions about what will make us fulfilled, successful, accepted, or free.
And yet, beneath all the noise, many people are still asking the same questions humanity has wrestled with for centuries:
Why am I here? What is really true? Why do I still feel empty when things seem to be going well? Can I really be forgiven for the things I have done? Is there more to life than this?
Nearly two thousand years ago, Jesus made an extraordinary statement:
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 8:32
It is one of the most quoted statements Jesus ever made. You may have heard it even if you have never opened a Bible.
But what exactly did Jesus mean?
What truth?
And free from what?
Jesus Was Talking About More Than Knowing Facts
John 8:32 is often quoted by itself, but Jesus actually began the thought in the previous verse:
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’”
John 8:31-32
Jesus was not simply saying that accurate information makes life better.
He was talking about knowing the truth about God, ourselves, and ultimately, Jesus Himself.
Later Jesus made an even stronger claim:
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’”
John 14:6
Notice what Jesus did not say.
He did not say, “I know the truth.”
He said, “I am...the truth.”
That is a much bigger claim.
Christianity ultimately stands or falls on the identity of Jesus Christ. The Bible does not present Him merely as a wise teacher offering good advice. Jesus claimed an authority and relationship with God that placed Him in an entirely different category.
So when Jesus talks about knowing the truth, He is eventually bringing us face to face with Himself.
But What Are We Being Set Free From?
When Jesus told His listeners that the truth would make them free, some of them were offended. They responded:
“They answered Him, ‘We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, “You will be made free”?’”
John 8:33
Their reaction makes sense.
They were thinking about political or physical freedom.
Jesus was talking about something deeper.
“Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.’”
John 8:34
There is the uncomfortable part of the conversation.
Sin.
It is a word that can sound religious, judgmental, or outdated. But biblically, sin is much more than a list of particularly bad things committed by particularly bad people.
Sin is our rebellion against God and our failure to live according to His good design.
Sometimes sin looks dramatic. Other times it looks respectable.
Pride. Dishonesty. Bitterness. Sexual immorality. Greed. Hatred. Selfishness. Envy. Idolatry. Refusing God His rightful place in our lives.
And Scripture makes an important point:
This is not just their problem.
It is our problem.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23
All means all.
Christianity does not divide humanity into good people who need nothing and bad people who need Jesus. It says something much more humbling.
We all need rescue.
The Problem Goes Deeper Than Behavior
We naturally try to fix ourselves from the outside.
Maybe I need better habits.
Maybe I need more discipline.
Maybe I need a healthier relationship.
Maybe I need more money, a better career, a fresh start, or a new environment.
Those things can certainly improve parts of life, but Jesus came to address something they cannot fix.
Our separation from God.
Scripture says:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23
That verse contains both the bad news and the good news of Christianity.
Sin has consequences. It separates us from the God who created us and ultimately leads to death.
But notice the second half:
“The gift of God is eternal life.”
The Christian Gospel is not primarily instructions about how bad people can become better people.
The word Gospel means good news.
And the good news begins with something God has done for us that we could never accomplish for ourselves.
Why Do I Need Jesus?
This is where the cross makes sense.
If our greatest problem were ignorance, we would only need a teacher.
If our greatest problem were unhappiness, we would only need encouragement.
If our greatest problem were bad habits, we would only need self-discipline.
But if our greatest problem is sin and separation from God, we need a Savior.
That is why Jesus came.
The Bible says:
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8
Jesus did not wait for us to clean ourselves up first.
He came for sinners.
He lived the righteous life we have failed to live. He willingly went to the cross, where He bore the judgment our sin deserved. He died, was buried, and rose again.
At the cross, God's justice and God's love meet.
Sin is not ignored.
The sinner is offered forgiveness.
And because Jesus rose from the dead, Christianity offers more than inspiration. It offers reconciliation with God and new life through Christ.
This Is the Freedom Jesus Was Talking About
Biblical freedom does not mean, “I can do whatever I want.”
Sometimes doing whatever we want is exactly what enslaves us.
Jesus offers something better.
Freedom from sin's condemnation. Freedom from trying to earn God's acceptance. Freedom from carrying guilt as though forgiveness were impossible. Freedom to know the God who created you. Freedom to become the person God intended you to be.
Jesus later said:
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
John 8:36
That is the heart of John 8.
The truth that sets us free is not merely a principle to understand.
Ultimately, freedom is found in a Person.
Jesus Christ.
What If I'm Not Sure I Believe All This?
Then start there.
You do not have to pretend.
Jesus is not threatened by sincere questions. Christianity invites you to investigate who He is, what He said, why He died, and whether He truly rose from the dead.
Read one of the Gospels. John is an excellent place to begin.
Ask God, even if you are uncertain He is listening:
“God, if You are real, help me understand who Jesus really is. Show me the truth.”
And keep seeking.
Jesus made a promise worth investigating:
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 8:32
The Truth May Be Closer Than You Think
Maybe you came to this page because you were curious.
Maybe life has raised questions you can no longer ignore.
Maybe you have carried guilt for years.
Maybe religion has disappointed you.
Maybe you have accomplished many of the things you thought would satisfy you, only to discover that something still seems missing.
Or maybe you simply want to know whether God is real.
Wherever you are starting from, the invitation of Jesus remains open.
The Gospel says that you cannot save yourself, but you do not have to.
God loves you. Christ died for sinners. Jesus rose again. Forgiveness and reconciliation with God are offered as a gift, received through faith in Him.
You can come honestly.
You can come with questions.
You can come with a past.
You can come knowing you do not have everything figured out.
Jesus said:
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”
John 6:37
Perhaps the next step is not to solve every spiritual question tonight.
Perhaps it is simply to take Jesus seriously enough to investigate His claim.
Because if Jesus really is who He says He is, then truth is not merely something you discover.
Truth is Someone you can know.
And when the Son makes you free, you are free indeed.
